Ezzat Gouda recalls his wife’s surprise when he informed her that his refugee claim in Canada had been denied and that he would be deported to his native country, where he faces the death penalty.
Gouda was speaking two days before his flight back to Egypt, where the justice system had sentenced him to death.
The pair, who have been separated since 2014, had always hoped that one day she would be able to join him in Canada, he added. They are now afraid that they will have to experience horror together in Egypt.
Gouda, a retired doctor, has been forced to return to Egypt by November 1 despite claims that he will be persecuted and killed there due to his political sympathies.
Gouda claimed to have assisted in the formation of the Freedom and Justice Party, which was associated with the Muslim Brotherhood and came to power following the country’s 2012 elections. Egypt’s army leader took control in a military coup against the political party’s government in 2013.
Since then, Egyptian authorities have detained thousands of members of the party and Muslim Brotherhood supporters, branding them terrorists in a campaign described by Amnesty International as a “ruthless bid to crush dissent.”
For Gouda and his family, the days following the coup were filled with terror and despair. He said that his 26-year-old son, Abdul Rahman, was shot and murdered while marching against the military takeover.

The following month, on August 16, 2013, he said his second son, Omar, was tragically shot while taking part in what he described as a peaceful protest.
Gouda was working in the hospital when his wife called to say their son had been dead. The next day, Omar’s body was taken to the hospital mortuary.
Police and army officers, according to Gouda, continued to harass his family and even raided his home while he was gone until he fled to Djibouti in 2014.
He worked as a physician in Djibouti until he reached retirement age last year, but when he couldn’t work anymore, he had to leave the country, he added.
Gouda was denied a visa to Canada and entered the nation in March 2022 through the unauthorized Roxham Road crossing between Canada and the United States.
In addition, he told immigration officials that he was afraid of residing in the United States because of rising anti-Muslim sentiment.
Gouda’s story corresponds to the facts he gave to immigration officials in his application to stay in Canada. In December, a decision was made to deny his refugee status.
